Introduction:
EasyNow is a easy-to-use Word Processor that is easy to use now
while producing files that are WordPerfect compatible. If you
want to complicate your life later, you can use WordPerfect to
read these files using the format for Wordperfect 4.2. EasyNow
cannot properly read files that are generated on WordPerfect 5.0
and above but these versions will read earlier version diskettes
so you can export EasyNow files to these versions. Also, you can
use other word processors and desktop publishers by importing
EasyNow files as long as they are referenced as WordPerfect 4.2
files.
As an added bonus, you can convert the files to ASCII files.
The program is easy to use because of its development background.
Refer to the "Background" section of this manual for further
details.
The program has built-in features to enhance its use on Laptop
Computers. Also, since EasyNow runs without needing a hard disk,
owners of the older Laptops will appreciate EasyNow's speed.
=====
BACKGROUND (AND WHAT MAKES THIS PROGRAM UNIQUE):
This program was first utilized in the late 1970's. It has since
been improved each and every year. How come you have never heard
of a program that has been around for more than 17 years? The
answer may be that it never had a name. Also, it was only
available as part of intelligent typewriters. At first it was
very limited. Gradually it had a video display added. Eventually
a disk drive added. The one thing that has never changed is its
simplicity. This simplicity was driven by the fact that
typewriter operators are not computer people and they aren't
given an opportunity to go to classes on the program. Hence, it
must be simple enough to start using with very little training.
To keep the program simple, I have kept to a few basic tenants:
1. The big savings any word processor offers is the ability to
save work and retrieve it. If you can retrieve and modify work,
you have accomplished 80% of the promise of word processing.
2. In most word processors, 20% of the commands can do 90% of the
work. As an example, most word processors contain dozens of ways
to move the cursor. Actually, just a few will suffice. It may
take a few extra seconds of your time to move the cursor with the
few available cursor commands I offer but there is a huge bonus:
The instruction manual and learning curve are 80% less!
13. In the "Features War", I surrendered long time ago. Most word
processing companies are pressured by their sales department for
an ever increasing number of features. Without these features,
their sales brochures no longer stack up to the competition. It
doesn't matter that you never asked for these features. For
example, many small legal firms use electronic typewriters
because the basic task is to retrieve a boilerplate and make
minor changes. Every other additional feature just gets in the
way. Why should a non-computer person have to also have a degree
in word processing just to accomplish the above simple tasks?
4. Most word processors assume you have a huge PC with a hard
disk drive. Oh yes, they do tell you that if you have to you can
run with just floppy disks. But here again, this is just to get
you to buy their program. They know that you will get so
frustrated swapping diskettes that you will eventually upgrade
you system. We take the opposite approach. We designed this
system first for a floppy disk based system and then made a few
provisions for hard disk operation. Once this program is loaded
into memory for use, it doesn't need the floppy drive to continue
running. The entire program is loaded into memory. No program
swaps are required.
5. The memory does not have to hold huge documents. Limiting the
document size allows the system to operate quicker and forces the
user to use multiple files on large documents. This may appear to
be a disadvantage but actually it prevents a user from
accidentally destroying a huge amount of work. The Pagemaker
desktop publishing program advises its users to always break up a
document into smaller more manageable "stories".

Registration, Legal Terms and Conditions
This software is provided to you under the following conditions:
1. You may copy the EasyNow files and give it to any who accepts
these terms. The copies you distribute must be complete and
unmodified. You do not have to be registered to distribute
these files.
2. If you have not registered this package, you do NOT have
execution right. You may however, execute the programs in this
package in order to evaluate them. If you use this software
for more than 90 days, you are required to purchase a
registered copy by sending completing the registration form on
the last page.
2Our phone number is (714) 964-9301 and my FAX number is (714)
968-4992. If you must call in the evening, I am usually available
until 11PM
3. Your registration includes a single 5.25 inch diskette. You
may elect to receive a 720K 3.5 inch diskette. We have a
high-quality 80K word Spelling Checker that we offer for a
small extra fee. We cannot offer this for free to Shareware
users because we must pay royalties on each copy we ship. If
you are a registered user, you may obtain it for an
additional $10.00 US. It is sold not as a shareware program
but as a standard software package for a single user using a
single computer. Registered users may obtain an EasyNow
update any time in the future by sending in $10.00.
4. I include a printed version of this manual to registered
users. The manual is printed on a Laser Printer and is bound
with a plastic ring style spline so it will lay flat. Extra
copies of the manual costs $10.00 US.
Educational institutions, Training Facilities, Companies and
Government agencies MUST be registered to use EasyNow for
their work.
5. This user is completely responsible for determining the
fitness or usability of this package. We are not liable for
any damages, of any kind, arising from any failure of the
program to perform as expected.
6. Only registered users can sell documents generated using the
EasyNow program.

=====
Registration Benefits:
Now that you read the legalities, I would like to emphasize the
practical reasons for registering your EasyNow program.
1. Its the right thing to do. We have spent years developing
this software. The Shareware distribution company that you
paid a small fee to for this diskette does not give us a
single penny of that fee. We are relying on your "Code of
Honor" to register your product.
2. You receive a printed manual. This diskette copy is very
limited in its format. It must be so you can print it out as
an ASCII file.
3. You get support. If you cannot resolve something on your own,
please feel free to contact us at the above telephone or FAX
numbers. Please have your computer powered up and ready to go
before you call.
4. You get the right to future updates. If I add enhancements or
fix a bug, you can get the latest version for a small fee. In
special cases I will waive the small fee.
5. You will be placed on our mailing lists for future products
and enhancements.
6. If you have a printer that is not on the options list, we
will consider adding it if you are a registered user.
=====
Hardware requirements
You will need a PC/XT/AT or clone with a monochrome display or a
CGA display. Most EGA/VGA displays allow operation in CGA mode.
For memory, you will need a minimum of 256K. You will also need
at least one floppy disk. You may use a hard disk but all
documents will be written and read directly from the Floppy
drive.
======
Printer Selection
The system prints to the selection of printers contained in the
4"Adjust" menu. If you don't see the exact printer you need, first
see if there is one that is close to what you want. For example,
the HP4L is a printer that runs PCL5 protocol that many printers
emulate. The Proprinter printer is another popular class of
printer that is commonly emulated.
The "ASCII File" selection will generate a new file on the
diskette with the same name but with the new name extension of
.ASC. This file can be printed (under DOS) to any ASCII Printer
by entering:
COPY NAME.ASC PRN
=====
Additional software required:
You will need DOS revision 2.10 or later.
=====
Disk contents:
The entire program including help menus and printer drivers is
contained in the file "EN.EXE. This file should be copied to any
other diskette that you intend to use. That way you will not have
to swap your diskettes out after start-up when you want to save
documents. In addition, your disk may contain a file titled
"DEFAULTS.DEF". This file is generated by EasyNow when you
request it to produce a new default file. Upon start-up, the
program looks for this file and if it doesn't find it substitutes
a built in set of defaults. The .ASC files are this manual. You
don't need to copy these files to other diskettes since it will
take up valuable diskette space. Your diskette may also contain a
file labled "DNAME.DOC". This file contains the name of the
Distributor of your Shareware. This name is automatically loaded
in each start-up and is displayed on the ruler menu page (Alt-T).
Your disk also contains a small file labled "PRINTM.BAT". This is
a file you can run to print out a manual on LPT1. It contains
only two statements:
COPY MANUAL1.ASC PRN <ENTER>
COPY MANUAL2.ASC PRN <ENTER>
To print out the manual, select drive A or B and type in:
PRINTM Ctrn (carriage return).
=====
Start-up:
1. Start the system with your DOS diskette installed in drive A
5or use DOS from your hard drive.
2. Install the EasyNow diskette in drive A.
3. Select drive A (if it is not already selected) by entering:
A:<carriage return>
4. Enter EN followed by a <carriage return>
5. Your system should load the program and display a blank page
with 2 lines at the top. You are now ready to use the system.
=====
Making backup copies of EasyNow:
A. The cheap way:
If you don't have a formatted blank diskette, use DOS to format a
diskette or buy some formatted diskettes.
Copy all of the files to your new diskette. Before doing this it
is a good idea to make sure the "protect" hole on the EasyNow
master diskette is covered. This guarantees you won't
accidentally write on the wrong diskette.
If you don't want to waste your diskette space with the manuals,
delete the 2 files MANUAL1.ASC and MANUAL2.ASC.
B: The easier way:
If you are a novice and don't know how to use DOS, I will supply
you with whatever quantity of diskettes you require. There is a
small cost. This service is only available for Registered Users.
=====
Quitting:
To end a session, first make sure you have saved any text you
have entered into memory to the diskette. Then press the F10 key
to quit the system and return to DOS. Strictly speaking, it isn't
necessary to return to DOS to shut off the power on your computer
but it is important to save the data and Spellcheck USERDICT.SYS
file. The system will remind you to save the data if you haven't
done so when you execute a F10 so maybe it is a good idea to
always use F10 to end a session.
=====
Quick Start Tutorial:
Because of the simplicity of the system, there are those users
6who might be tempted to start using the system without reading
this instruction manual. To this we say...Go ahead. You should be
able to generate simple documents without any further help. If
you decide to do this, there are only a few things we should
mention because they are not intuitive.
1. Some of the instructions (Set bold, etc.) generate "hidden
codes" that are not normally displayed. To view them, use the
Alt-V instruction. A split screen will display the normal text
and a second version with hidden codes displayed. This mode
allows you to view the text only. No changes may be made in this
mode. One of the important hidden codes is the "Ruler/Tabs" code.
Actually, this is the entire ruler page embedded into the text.
It only shows the 2 words "Ruler/Tabs" but much more is actually
stored there (In Wordperfect 4.2 format). It is generated when
you exit the Ruler mode with an ESC key. A quick method to
determine when the cursor is pointing to a hidden code is to view
the "=" sign in position 18 of the top status line. If it is bold
(or green on CGA), the cursor is setting on a hidden character.
This quick reference allows you to see hidden codes without
constantly using the Alt-V command.
2. When you print out your document, make sure the cursor is at
the top of the document if you want the entire document to print.
Printing always commences at the cursor location.
3. The "F1=Help" message is a bold message (green background on
CGA) when the document has not been changed and doesn't need to
be saved. If you attempt to exit the program without saving an
altered document, you will be reminded to save it.
4. If you have a special format (Ruler page and other options),
you may generate a Defaults file so you will not have to be
constantly setting up this format manually. Refer to the Alt-D
menu.
5. If you want to generate simple page numbers, use the Alt-1
command. If you need more sophisticated Headers and/or Footers
with your document, read those sections of the manual.
6. If you want to alter the audio level, the Insert cursor size
or the Printer Select, use the Alt-A command. This information is
also saved in the defaults file.
7. When changing the ruler settings, change the pitch to
automatically set up a standard right and left margin. This can
be handy if you forgot the margins of a standard page.
8. If you edit lines and push words off the screen, you may use
the Arrow up followed by an Arrow down. This updates the page.
9. If you are an Attorney or someone who uses a lot of
7boilerplate documents, use the vertical tab (Alt-W) character in
your text where you normally place the variable data. When you
later use the boilerplate and do a "Go to Vertical Tab" (Alt-K)
command, the Alt-W character will be removed automatically.
10. When you use the "Erase to End" command (Alt-E), the disk
file name will be forgotten by the system. This is a safety
feature because with such a drastic change, the system assumes
you are building a new document from a previously disk file. To
prevent you from accidentally overwriting the original file, it
forces you to enter the name again. Exit the help menus and
perform an Alt-1 command (and then select the 2).
